Initially I was put off with the writing style. It slips from 1st person narrator to 3rd person seemingly at random. With the 3rd POV being in spots where the narrator couldn’t have possibly been or known. Then it hit me, I think the change in 1st vs 3rd person is because the narrator is a writer by trade and is using that to assume when the other person is doing when he isn’t present. Filling in his own gaps per se. This makes me less annoyed with it. However, I don’t feel like I can trust anything the narrator says. Except maybe the epilogue. I didn’t love this book. I didn’t particularly enjoy the characters and the plot is actually pretty basic. What makes it stand out as original is the narrator himself. I enjoyed how quickly it reads and gets to what it wants to say, but this may be my last Alex Michaelides book since I didn’t love The Silent Patient either. I guess his unreliable narratives just aren’t my thing, but maybe they’ll be yours.

A dark fairytale with beautiful prose… this story has my heart and soul! Olivia’s story is very much unexpected yet exactly what I wanted. Her strength and perseverance is something I hope for in all children.
