A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing by Eimear McBride
4.0
I am a massive fan of Eimear McBride. The first book I read of hers was The Lesser Bohemians which I absolutely adored. I found it difficult to get into, as the writing style is so different to anything I've ever read, but after a few pages it makes sense. I have avoided A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing for quite a while because I'm not a huge fan of emotional books but this book was suggested in a book club so I went for it. And I was right, it is an extremely emotional book - I cried a lot, but it was a worthwhile read. The book depicts the sinister side of Catholicism, particularly in Ireland, and how religion can be used as punishment and as a method of control and shame. There are a whole host of themes that are explored: sibling relationships, terminal illness, sexual and domestic abuse, shame, consent and identity.
