The only thing I did not like about this book were the mundane phrases. Which would’ve been fine if they were mortals living in the mortal world for most of their lives, but they weren’t. They took my out of the story ‘cause they were so ordinary. Like example: “it was a really, really pretty sword” or “like everything else, it sucked”. I know it’s such a nick pickie thing, but it took me out of it. Other than that amazing. Cardan is everything and Jude is so amazing and i love them both

Brief summary: Spin the Dawn is about a young woman named Maia who dreams of becoming the Emperor's tailor. When the opportunity presents itself Maia decides to impersonate her brother and be a part of a competition for the chance to become the royal tailor. Maia is met with unusual challenges and she captures the attention of Edan, the Lord Enchanter, who wants to help her.
"Project Runway meets Mulan" is such a good way to describe the first half of this book, but it takes a turn that I would not have expected if I hadn't read the full synopsis. Maia and Edan have to embark on a journey to be able to create the great Goddess Amana's three dresses. The story's mythology is probably my favorite part. It's so richly detailed that one can't help but wish there was a book with the full story. The detail that goes into the world is beautiful, too. It was handled with such great care and it was so beautifully explained.
Maia is such a good character and I love the family dynamic in the story. It was such a pleasant element to the story that not many YA novels have. Her family is not perfect, but they care for each other and her dad id so supportive of her which swells my heart. As for Maia, she will not let the fact that she is a girl change her dreams. She refuses to sit down and marry someone who she does not love. Her dream is to become the royal tailor and she will achieve it. I loved her determination through the book and enjoyed seeing her grow throughout it.
My only problem with it is the romance. I felt like the characters moved a little too fast and there could've been more development with it.
Overall, Spin the Dawn was an enthralling read and I can't wait to have a physical copy in my hands. (And for the second book because that ending!)
