I spent 75% of this book wondering if it was written by AI. Conflicting descriptions. Too much info dumping in each sentence. The writing felt as if it spent too much time trying to fill the space and up the word count when so much it could have been said in a simpler way to leave more of a lasting impression.
There isn’t much growth for the main character nor does she really seem to have any flaws. She’s good at fighting, killing, loves her coffee and romance books, and her dragons and you’re really not shown anything different. Even when she’s finally in a situation she might not have the upper hand, she’s still being portrayed in a way that says nothing can touch her.
The last quarter of the book seemed to pick up and find a consistent pace and voice at last. It was animated, memorable, and finally started to paint a picture that didn’t contradict itself.
I did enjoy many of the barbs and quips between El and Cayden. Some fun dialogue there. Cayden’s character had a lot of depth and kept surprising me. Just wish Elowen could have had the same type of growth and depth.
