Home is buzz-worthy for two reasons. 1.) It's the companion piece to the Pulitzer Prize-winning Gilead from a few years ago. 2.) It is certainly worthy of buzz in its own right. Marilynne Robinson has crafted quite a meaty, thought-provoking book here. It's the story of a troubled, prodigal son who returns home to his ailing father and caretaker sister who has troubles of her own. Set in the late 50's Jack Boughton hasn't been home in 20 years-not since he refused to marry the girl he got pregnant and disappointed his minister father beyond the telling of it. Fallen on harder times than usual and questioning his place on earth he returns to his childhood home and slowly builds new relationships with both his father and sister. They all gingerly step around one another as they navigate these new relationships. Religious faith and doubt are the core ingredients of this novel about familial love and how it ultimately cannot conquer all, but it sure makes a valiant effort.
