It's hard not to compare this sophomore outing to Niffenegger's debut novel, The Time-Traveler's Wife. I flat-out loved TTW, but something about HFS put me off somewhat. It's nowhere near the level of disappointment I felt with Alice Sebold's second novel, Almost Moon; however, as well-written as HFS is the plot got away a little toward the end. Also? Niffenegger telegraphed her plays quite broadly. No real surprises and no real enjoyment can be found here. All in all, I liked it, but I cannot recommend it.
