Everything I could've wanted from a follow up AFTG book that I never thought I'd get. AND THERE'S GOING TO BE A SECOND ONE. Honestly the most stressful part of my reading experience was getting to the 90% mark and realizing there was no way this would all be wrapped up by the end because I didn't know until after I finished it that a second one was planned.

I read the first one for the war imagery and references not the romance so this one wasn't as enjoyable for me lmao. If you're a normal person who read it for the romance tho I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I hyperfocused on this audiobook to the point that I finished it in 2 days. Which is pretty unheard of for me. But this book basically reached into my brain and pulled everything I could've asked for. All my favorite tropes in a WWI setting with a main character who loves Classics??? Truly I want to make the rating 5.75 but 1) I don't know if it'll let you do that and 2) don't want people to think it's a mistake. IT'S JUST SO GOOD! THE WAY EVERYTHING IS HANDLED IS EXCELLENT! IT NAILS THE HISTORY WHILE CREATING NEW CHARACTERS THAT FEEL LIKE THEY BELONG IN THAT HISTORY. AND IT DOESN'T SHY AWAY FROM THE BRUTALITY OF THAT HISTORY OR HOW IT AFFECTED PEOPLE. AND THE AUDIOBOOK!! I WON'T SAY TOO MUCH BUT HONESTLY I WOULD RECOMMEND LISTENING TO PORTIONS OF IT EVEN IF YOU DON'T LISTEN TO THE WHOLE THING BECAUSE THEY MADE A DECISION THAT CAN ONLY BE DONE VIA AUDIO AND IT'S HAUNTING IN THE PERFECT WAY. Will I scream about this book to anyone who will listen for who knows how long? Absolutely.

Alice Oseman once again proves to be amazing at tackling difficult subjects in a more lighthearted way that doesn't trivialize the issues. The way they handle the discussion of sex and the way she portrays it visually is stunning and feels so true to the rest of Heartstopper. Issues from Vol. 4 are touched upon too and there's a great scene with Charlie's mom (sorry I'm American) that I especially loved the inclusion of. We also got a great coming out scene from a beloved character which I also throughly enjoyed. I will be sad when it ends, but I can't wait for the send off Alice provides us with because I know it'll be amazing.

Hamlet is my favorite Shakespeare play and my childhood obsession was The Lion King which is basically Hamlet with lions so trust me when I say this retelling is amazing. It stays true to the source material in ways you won't expect and puts its own spin on things in ways you won't expect and it's all brilliant.
