This was a delight as all T Kingfisher’s books are. Older characters, which I love, and one sheltered teen trying to take down an abusive sorceress mother. The romance between the older characters was cute, and the quirks Kingfisher adds to her characters were fun.

I was hoping for this to go deeper but it was pretty surface level and basic. Probably really good for the general public but not those that have read more on friendship and community.

While the prose is well crafted and focused on food descriptions in a world where most of our food sources have died out, the story of extremely wealthy people using that privledge to screw over everyone else didn’t have a lot of nuance.

I oreferred the first half to the second half. The second got a little preachy and when he started to advocate for “unschooling” I thought that was a bit extreme. Leans more into advocating for systemic change vs individual change.

What a satisfying conclusion! So many reveals and tied up loose ends while also leaving hints for the future of the series.

There is no real way to describe these thematic, dense books that are a discussion of religion, politics, and war in a utopian setting but they are weird and interesting.
