When We Were Vikings by Andrew David MacDonald

Go to review page

What do I say about 21 year old Zelda (who is on the fetal alcohol spectrum), who dreams of becoming a Viking hero? That she has a heart bigger than those give her credit for? That she loves learning new words thru Word-of-The-Day? That she attends a program for special needs adult at the community center? Do I tell you, that she is on a quest to be legendary? No, I will tell you that Zelda is there for her brother Gert as he tries to find his way in the so called normal world. I will tell you that Zelda is a legend. For readers who loved The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

I've run 3 book clubs for years and think I've very good at it. I always tell members it's not if you love or hate the book, it's how the book made you feel. The best books will make you feel & that's what came to mind reading this. There is so much outrage about this book and the publishing industry and authors writing about experiences that are not their own.
Group: How One Therapist and a Circle of Strangers Saved My Life by Christie Tate

5.0

Author Christie Tate writes openly about her years of being a member of an unconventional therapy group. Why unconventional? Because in this group setting, members are encouraged to engage/challenge others to grow beyond what's holding them back. Christie bares all her angst in this book and it's clear that it's her roadmap and no one else's.

4 children of a famous rock star and the wife he left behind throw their annual party at their Malibu beach house. They are known as the Rivas: Nina, the surfer/supermodel, brothers Jay and Hud, one who is a famous surfer, the other a well known photographer; and Kit, the baby sister. These 4 are the children of the legendary rock star, Mick Riva. The story takes place over 24 hours and many secrets surface among the family, so many secrets that the foundation of the family is shaken. Readers will ponder on what makes a family? Is it DNA? Is it times spent in each other's presence?
Drowning by T.J. Newman

T.J. Newman, the best selling author of the mega hit *Falling* is still writing about airplanes and flying but she has amped up the thrill factor with Drowning. Flight 1421 crashes into the ocean off of Hawaii and there are passengers that manage to get out of the plane before it sinks, and there are those who choose to remain inside to avoid the inferno outside. Which passengers are the lucky ones? Which ones are the survivors? A heart pumping read that is more about being trapped inside a small, twisted scrap of metal underwater than the actual plane crash. Author Newman knows how to pull readers into that fine line between fear and exhilaration. Great summer read!
