Murder in the Pacific: Ifira Point by Matt Francis
3.0
Love the setting (wish I was there, really!) and characters; I enjoyed the diversity and introduction to the backgrounds of the characters. The mystery was somewhat intriguing but super super slow and the ending was kind of unexpected but yet felt right for this novel.
I do think the book might benefit from some proofreading though.

Beyond Year Zero by Lawrence Held
eh premise was promising but I struggled with this character who suddenly switch from a decent investigative reporter to a serial killer?! And then, made excuses for his killings?! No.

A Killer's Code by Isabella Maldonado

Isabella Maldonado is a must-read author for me. Soon as I see, there is a release, I'm there! I enjoyed her characters (protagonists are usually female POC) and the thrilling adventures she always takes her readers on.
In this third instalment of the series, Dani Vega and her team are on a 'treasure hunt' of sort. The treasure being a haul of evidence to lock up some very bad guys. Of course, the bad guys are in it too and determined to stop Vega and her team by any means. There was suspense, a hint of romance, and of course, an exciting showdown. Highly recommended author but you do have to read each series in order.
Why do I feel that this is the last in the series?! I won't say exactly how the book ended (be calm, no one died, at least no one important) but I just felt that it was really all so bittersweet. Maybe that's just me but if you've read this and have thoughts, DM me please!
My thanks to Thomas & Mercer for ecopy of book via NetGalley in exchange of my honest thoughts
Scarlet by Genevieve Cogman
3.75
I just had to have this book. Primarily because I thought it was a retelling of The Scarlet Pimpernel because it is my first book love. Sweeping adventure featuring a masked hero and swept-off-your-feet romance -what's not to love?! at least, by a 10 year old girl!
This novel isn't quite a retelling of that classic story even while it features The League. We read from the perspective of an English housemaid who found herself involved in one of the League's mystifying rescue attempts. I don't fully love this protagonist but yet, I understood all the problems she was facing and was brave enough to voice (onya!). She is, however, quite a mature one despite her ignorance of the world. I would love to see how much more she develops later on.
Oh and the vampires... I must say that I found it a little strange but there is a twist and I hope there will be a bigger twist in the next book that explains the twist in this book! It was fun read though I feel a little disappointed in that I'm missing the presence of some of the characters from the original classic.
