Too slow and I’m a slow burn fan. There was a lot of jarring halts in the pacing enough so to apparently warrant part of a sharper dedicated to saying “yea I know the pacing sucks but I don’t care”. At some point the disbelief became greater than my desire to keep reading.
I get that it’s fantasy but there was too little to grasp onto for me to suspend my disbelief.
Fishing based kingdom burns down and everyone starves. I guess the boats were all dry docked at the time of the fire.
Just cannot get into the story or the characters. Felt too far away from normal for me. I love everything else Chambers has written, this one just wasn’t for me.

Just kinda got bored, I had seen the movie so the suspense of the story was a bit spoiled for me! Cute and cozy read, just not what I needed at that time.
DNFd thru no fault of the author or the book, I was raised by a controlling manipulative narcissist and the themes just hit too close to home. Might pick it up again later in life when I’ve healed more thru therapy but for now I’ll skip this one.
Susan, you're a boomer.
Thinly veiled racism in the first chapter, a heap of "mental health should stay a secret", and a dash of internalized misogyny.
All in the first one or two chapters. I'll never know if it gets better because I had to put this load of trash down before I threw my kindle out the window.
