The Captive Kingdom by Jennifer A. Nielsen
2.0
Considering that the first 3 books were known as the Ascendance trilogy, it’s no surprise that this fourth book was not planned from the beginning. The prose and story structure is thrown together sloppily compared to the predecessors. Characters become caricatures and nothing is remotely threatening throughout the book. The main villain is revealed and it’s said “she’s the most dangerous person I ever met” yet she does absolutely nothing remotely dangerous. No one dies after the reveal. At least no one important. If you make claims and want your villain to seem threatening, Make them do evil threatening stuff, like kill people.
Then there’s little things that add up like names. The country they visit in this book is called Belland and the people that live there are called bellanders, which sounds hilariously similar to bell end.

Would be five stars if it weren’t for the ending. Felt like a cop out and really messed with the pacing of the book
