I loved that I started this book feeling unsettled, and ended up still very unsettled, but for different reasons. The author does a great job of keeping the tension through the book and really challenging your perspective of the subject. The cast of characters is somewhat large, but the ones really really get to know are fleshed out well and our understanding of them really makes a difference as the story progresses. I was happy that, for the most part, nothing really felt predictable, especially not the ending.
I admit too that I read the prequel novella before starting this one and while it isn't really spoiler-filled, I do feel it influenced how I went into starting this one. I highly recommend reading this first, but it won't ruin the experience either.

This was a fantastic read and for me, very different than a lot of the epic fantasies I've read in the last few years. The characters had strong personalities that ranged from "I love them, I need more" to "I hate them, I need more." The interactions between everyone were a joy to read every time.
The pacing is something that really stood out to me with this book. The author did a really good job of keeping a very quick pace with the story, but it never felt like things were rushed or that important moments were being skipped over. So much was packed into this book without being overwhelming.
This book was fun, exciting, cute, and heartfelt. It hooks you early and keeps you.

I had high hopes for this book. The concept sounded really interesting. From the start, I just didn't like any of the characters. The book felt like it dragged on longer than it should have. After a while the tension the characters felt just sort of lost its edge and I honestly started feeling a little bit bored. It did not help that the writing felt a bit dry. The parts I liked most about the book, the internal conflict and development, didn't really have anything to do with the horror aspect of things. Sadly though the characters just never became likable to me so even the parts liked got old pretty quickly.
