A Ghost In The Throat by Doireann Ní Ghríofa
This was an unexpectedly beautiful book. I usually like to know everything about a book before going in, but I think there isn't much to say about this book other than the fact that it has absolutely beautiful prose. It considers the topic of women in translation through the perspective of a mother who is engrossed by a certain poet and her poem.
I definitely think the first half of the book is much stronger than the second half (which is more history-focused and tends towards info dumpy), but I still thoroughly enjoyed it!

- Strong character development? Yes
This is definitely a powerful book that should be widely read (wtih the caveat that it's very graphic and there are many trigger warnings!) -- I'm not sure how I feel about the rating, but I really enjoyed it! There were a couple of moments that had some problematic lines of thinking towards other races, sexualities, etc. but I think some of that was discussed as Precious developed as a character. I'll say ~3.5/4 for a rating, but I don't think star ratings rightfully encompass this book.
