This is the first 5 star book I have read for a long time. Sometimes the writing style didn’t seem completely consistent, and sometimes the pacing felt slightly   ‘longwinded’?

But none of that matters. This was a five star book because it couldn’t have evoked more perfect emotions in me. I have been restless while reading this book, because my mind has been with Gaunt and Ellwood.

I feel disgusted at the world and disgusted that the century of peace did not come, and that people continue to die in the ways pictured in this book.

I cannot describe how much this book has affected me. It’s not my first piece of war fiction but seeing queer love, as well as being a boy their age, has made me feel uncomfortably close to it. Uncomfortable is good. I don’t think this book is going to stop taking up space in my mind for a long time. This morning I woke up mouthing Henry Gaunt and Sidney Ellwood. I feel this pain in my bones. I look at all the men and love we lost - and lose -and feel sick.

I think that the writing was very good. I just didn't really build a connection with either of the MC's or the magic.

the writing was enjoyable and this was a solid remix. I felt like Mrs bennett’s reaction for example was highly unrealistic but I also understand that the author was likely trying to avoid things getting very dark at the end of the novel.

the writing felt very very juvenile and I’m glad I didn’t come for the world or the plot otherwise I’d be disappointed. there was 0 building. I’m giving 1.75 stars because I liked seeing body image issues representation during trans sex, and there were one or two nice moments - but that’s all.

overall it felt like a poorly written wattpad story, I’m sorry
