These Burning Stars

Similar themes to her other books, but nonetheless very enjoyable.
adventurous

Well-written but painfully clichéd. If you've read Red Rising or Ender's Game you've pretty much read this book. The setting is different and there are marginally more politics but the main story is a combination of those two beat for beat. I was very surprised that this book came out in 2023 and not 10 years ago. That being said, if you're not sick of the genre yet this is a good read. I won't be continuing with the series though.

This anthology had a few standouts, but the remaining stories were mediocre; I found myself confused and not interested enough to bother rereading to find clarity.

Favourite stories:
Roadside Attraction by Alix E. Harrow
The Difference Between Love and Time by Catherynne M. Valente - a very Catherynne M. Valente story, I hadn't realized how much I missed her writing. This one made me feel things.
Unbashed, or: Jackson, Whose Cowardice Tore a Hole in the Chronoverse by Sam J. Miller - accomplished exactly what it set out to do and left me in pain.
and the final story by Ellen Klages, whose title contains an unfortunate ethnic slur - I was not expecting to read lesbian sci fi from the 90s in this anthology but ended up pleasantly surprised by this story. I really enjoyed it.
