i was really hyped up in the beginning, but it lost me pretty quickly after that. maybe it's because i'm not a middle-aged, spiritual-former-christian, and/or white lady? some mildly moving/inspiring nuggets, but for the most part, it felt like a lot of things i had heard before, repeated in a way that didn't really resonate with me.

i can see this book being eye-opening or groundbreaking for some, and that's great! no offense to y'all but guess i'm just built different 😪

the adults in my life should have been MUCH more concerned by how attached 14 year old me was to this book

unfortunately & alarmingly, 24 year old me re-read this & still thought "wow same binch"

i think reading this book briefly made me an angrier, more bitter person. and also very afraid for my future. nice.

(to be clear, this is a positive review)

damb i sure do love stories where Nothing Really Happens, Just Vibes. this did not disappoint— feels very agnes vardas' cleo from 5 to 7 but make it ✨depressing✨

this book had been sitting on my shelf for ages but i didn't get around to finally reading it until after seeing it quoted in kate zambreno's green girl. i can see the influence.

i think it's incredibly brave & sexy of me to be thrown yet again into existential crisis by how relatable this content was. anyways should i blow up my life, bleach my hair & drop everything to move to paris

me, writing another review about how i'm Going Through It (and always have been Going Through It and may never stop Going Through It)? more likely than you think!

anyways so i read this twice during quarantine & both times, it was an absolute game changer. perfect mix of comforting words, motivation & therapeutic techniques. the advice offered here isn't groundbreaking but this book made me actually want to listen to it for the first time. the fanciful surrealism of beth mccoll's comedic voice lightens the heaviness of the subject matter & creates a self help book that doesn't come off as patronizing, clinical or just plain out of touch. mccoll writes in a way that is so relatable because she has also Been There. (her twitter @imteddybless is also delightful & you should follow it if you aren't already)

it's structured in a way that you can read it straight through or you can pick out parts you need as you need them. i know i'll probably be doing both.
