Once again, the "staff picks" of the Multnomah County Library has led me to a delicious read. I was so eager for the story, that I had to remind myself to savor the language and descriptions.

Very dream-like, with metaphors that run deep.
Talk Talk by T.C. Boyle

I love how Boyle is able to simultaneously describe a character through the character's thinking process AND via outside observation. This book was full of suspense: the implausible intertwining of characters becomes plausible and as the situations build up, I couldn't put the book down. Boyle loves being clever and he loves using irony, and he's able to do it in tasteful doses.

I was reluctant to read this book because the jacket synopsis did not really draw me in. Plus, the title seemed to be imitating "The Girl with the Pearl Earring." Yet everybody was talking about this book and it seems I'm the last in the universe to finally read it! And I'm happy I (finally) did.
Exploding Whale: And Other Remarkable Stories from the Evening News by Doug Brazil, Paul Linnman

I heard a version of this story while working on the Truth boats out of Santa Barbara harbor in the early 90s. What I liked most about this book was the way Linnman talked about the other stories he covered: all the inspiring non-exploding-whale stories.
