a soon-to-be cult fave among romantasy fans! this is a window onto arken and kieran slowly falling in love despite the barriers that stand between them & a happily-ever-after... but the barriers have teeth 🥲 the political&magic plotlines subtly unfolding in the background of their love story have me Theorizing but i have to wait for the next book(s) to find out if i'm right 😭 but in the meantime at least we have the balm of the museum & bath scenes to help soothe the DRAMA of that ending

i really loved this initially, but it lost me a little bit in the last 1/3rd. i'm not referring to the twists, i liked those! but there were some parts i just wasn't jazzed about. some scenes didn't really carry as much emotional weight as they were trying to, and some just lagged without accomplishing the quiet resonance that they tried to have. only in this one part of the book though - the first 2/3rds of the book did not fail to do either of those things! that earlier success was what made it noticeable when it stopped being true, though. i have nothing to really complain about specifically, and nothing that i thought was Bad to warrant complaining. still looking forward to reading the sequel

this was good! it should probably have an objectively higher rating, because there really isn't anything *wrong* with it, but it just didn't fully capture me. it was fine. i didn't fall in love with it though

she essentially took this as an opportunity to update book 1 to be more palatable for today's audiences and the current state of the genre. which i appreciate! most of my issues with book 1 were fixed in this version. i don't think it would work as a book on its own but it's good as a companion book. regrettably cat and bones will live in my head for a while >:( the angry face is because the source material is so.... well. lmfao.
