I'm not sure how to rate this book. I found it informative, a bit terrifying, and at times utterly naïve and far too optimistic.

I'm not sure how many stars to give a book written by AI, and which should terrify us all. Holy shit, y'all. This is dark AF.

 Read. This. Book.

If you want to understand the transformation of a budding democratic Russia to what Putin has transformed into an autocratic, dictator's dream of a hellscape for individuals, you'll absolutely want to read this book.

There is nothing more important to a civil society or democratic society than a free and independent media. Journalists like Elena Kostyuchenko and her colleagues at Novaya Gazeta -- both living and dead -- embody the absolute best of Russia. Perhaps that's what made them most dangerous to Putin.

This book is beautiful. It is also heartbreaking. But, people like Elena who continue to speak truth to power against impossible odds give me hope.

I am *still* enraged that a book like this is necessary. But, here we are thanks to Mitch McConnell and DJT, the latter of whom most certainly is responsible for a former mistress or several having abortions.

Be safe out there, friends. And pass this book along to your friends and family, especially your daughters.

And remember to register and vote.
