I really struggled with the writing style of this book. The dialogue didn't feel natural, and it was super rushed. The stakes weren't huge, and although there were elements of a dark anti-hero, none of it was enough (threats to hurt people, but no actual follow through). The flow and pacing of the book was also weird, with some scenes feeling as though they were just slotted in without thought about how they truly connected to the story.
There were scenes that indicated more was going on with certain characters, but none of it eventuated. This may be because there will be other books in the series, but it just left me feeling irked like it was a red herring. The main thing that connected these 2 characters was revealed in a couple of pages, and again, no real feelings or acknowledgement of how big it all was.
The spice was ok, but the whole "angry Xavier" scene didn't feel great at all. Big, big icks.
Note, this book has degredation/humiliation scenes, which also aren't my cup of tea.

This book is definitely a beginner dark romance, in comparison to some of the other ones out there, but my gosh what a book! There are a couple of very intense SA scenes that are a trigger risk.
My favourite thing about this book was the structure. I am so over the number of books where the characters have a previous connection and it's all told through flashbacks, but the first 30% of this book shows us Lachlan and Lyla meeting and forming their relationship. Also, there is a decent plot in this book and it doesn't take a back seat to the spice.
Lachlan was possessive, without being unhinged like the H in other DR books. He had a reason for his emotions, but he was also open to changing his mind and didn't need a redemption arc to excuse any shitty/questionable behaviour. I couldn't keep the smile off my face during all the MC interactions.
This will definitely be a book I revisit (more than a few times)

This story was such a great premise, and I loved watching the relationship develop between all the characters. I just wish the end wasn't so anti-climactic. We should have seen Avery get her revenge, or at least witness it.
And then the sudden proposal after being with the guys for 2 months

What an absolutely beautiful book. The writing was captivating, and the story between Davey and Jonathan was beautiful. I cried. I laughed. I fell in love with them as they fell in love with each other.
