This is one of those books that stays with you for a long time after you've finished it. It is heart-breaking, and so traumatically real.
Reading River's inner monologue makes your heart bleed. You, as the reader, know she should leave, but it makes sense why she doesn't. It takes, on average, 7 attempts for someone to successfully leave a domestic violence relationship. The gaslighting and manipulation of the perpetrator brings the survivor back multiple times. It's upsetting to see other reviews that basically victim blame River for her choices (because this is what society does too).
The violence in this book was difficult to read, but helps to understand the reality for a number of people in violent relationships.
It's definitely not going to be everyones cup of tea and the triggers are definitely not to be taken lightly (multiple rapes [conscious and unconscious; vaginally and anally], graphic violence, violence towards animals, incest, mental health, cheating), but this is also a book that had an impact on me and is one I will be processing for a while, which I think is the sign of great writing.
