Bocchi the Rock!, Vol. 4 by Aki Hamazi

I’m still enjoying this series, but finding myself wishing the plot would advance quicker. (Though I’m never quite sure with Japanese series whether I’m missing cultural context that would shift my opinion.)

This is an impressively intriguing setting in this trilogy. I am enjoying seeing Phex explore new experiences and learn more about the universe, now that the two groups are on tour together. This came very close to a perfect star-rating, except that the epilogue was too cliffhanger-y for my taste. (As a reader, I feel insulted when books end on cliffhangers: like the author doesn't trust me enough as a reader to believe that I would return to their world… even worse, it signals to me that the author doesn't trust their work enough.) I'm also annoyed because I really want to know more and have to wait until I have the next book in my hands!
Practical Rules for Cursed Witches by Kayla Cottingham

Sometimes it’s fun to read something that nourishes the young-at-heart party of me (that I so often cover up). And when love and magic are in that mix, it’s even better! I really enjoyed the mix of families (flawed, loving, neglectful, devoted, found, from birth… in countless combinations from that list) and that sometimes we have to be true to ourselves in spite of what we’ve been taught over the years. I’m only sad that I’ve finished the book now!

A really exciting story and I’m intrigued to learn more about Teagan and her Gift in future books …

A strong volume, reassuring me about this series. I can’t imagine where it’s going to go, so I’m excited to see where each chapter leads
Fatal Intrusion by Jeffery Deaver, Isabella Maldonado

This was a really good book… I have enjoyed the investigative partnership, and the interplay between the DHS investigator and her sister was also interesting to read. There were occasional moments that stretched credulity for me, but most of them made enough sense in the book's world that I didn't mind them. About my only concern is how this partnership works in the books to come: working together felt natural in this case, but I worry that the authors will have to stretch to find good cases for them to continue to collaborate. But I think I'm probably going to have to read at least one more book, because they work well together, and I want to see how the sister relationship evolves after this book.
