The writing style was simple and the pacing was good enough that there wasn't a moment where i got bored. What fell off for me was the characterization... especially Yeyang, who felt so lackluster and had zero qualities other than being the "love interest". Ying's characterization was okay; I just didn't care for her enough as a character but it wasnt as bad as Yeyang. While i couldn't care less abt the romance, I loved Yekan and Ying's friendship so much! It was my favorite part of the whole book. I hope we see more of them in Book 2.

The last 10% of the book was its saving grace and made feel hopeful of the potential of Book 2

“You said that if I wanted to seek revenge, that you would wield the sword on my behalf. But that was a lie. I was your sword, but you were never mine.”

I'm so glad that it didn't end with Ying forgiving Yeyang and all. Their romance didn't make sense to me. I mean, they barely had interactions, and suddenly they're yearning tragic lovers?!

Anyways i hope Book 2 is angstyyyyyyy

this wasnt as bad as i thought it would be. though it felt rushed and underwhelming and left many plot holes and unanswered questions in the name of the story curse. thats a smart way to not address them but idc i want answers. also they were quite literally angsty til the end of the book which gave the ending a very unsatisfying feel. i wished for more scenes of them just being happy together.

I'm obsessed to say the least!!!!!
at first i didn't know what to expect, i picked this up to pass time, but it ended up being a new favorite!! i thought the alternating flashback povs to present time povs would eventually annoy me but i actually enjoyed it. it made me not want to put the book down as the new info and context kept piecing with each other. the most important part that kept me invested was the characters, they were all very compelling to read about. I'm a sucker for complex characters and i love how this book explored morality and what it means to be a hero/villain from multiple perspectives, such as how the public views your actions rather than intentions, and just completely subverted that superhero/villain trope.
LASTLY THERES FOUND FAMILY!!! im the #1 found family enthusiast.
i need book 3 in my hands rn 😩
