I think that, while an interesting meditation on depression, love, existence, and the way we all try to keep ourselves from spiraling into the void, it just wasn't very real for me. Maybe it's because it's been translated, but the prose didn't really strike a chord with me.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. Ali's voice is powerful, hypnotic, and lyrical.
I grew up reading D'aulaire's Book of Greek Myths and being obsessed with fairy tales and folklore from all over the world. I think that this has been one of those times I've never been happier that I read the stories already. This book is for lovers of Greek mythology, coming of age female-led novels, and just fans of great storytelling in general. It's fabulously crafted, heartfelt, and worth a read.
I can't believe how quickly I devoured this book. It felt like I couldn't tear myself away from Anna's merlot-soaked, black-and-white movie loving mind. The plot was gripping, the twists weren't insulting to the reader, and the characters just leapt off of the page.
I'm so glad I got the chance to experience this story, I can't wait to visit Anna's house again soon!
