maybe i'm a stick in the mud, but i felt like i couldn't fully enjoy this book as much as i felt inclined to because of kya and tate's age gap at the beginning of their romance. can we stop romanticizing the idea that 19 year-olds are at the same maturity level as 14 year-olds? i feel like it would have been so easy to just change those details. there are also some weird, awkward anecdotes that happen at the beginning of their love story that just felt very unnecessary.

that aside, if we forget about that part, it is a really beautiful story about an isolated girl learning how to navigate life. as someone from a similar region as kya, perhaps i have a soft spot for this novel because of how the author so beautifully describes swamp lands throughout. i've read a lot of reviews complaining about the author's prose, which, yes, it is *quite* flowery so if that's not your thing, you won't enjoy this. i happened to enjoy it, though.

a quick, easy read - there's a little bit of something for everyone here, science/non-fiction, romance, mystery, crime. regardless of my gripes, it certainly made me feel, which is all i can ask a book to do.
