Ravana has always been on the top of my anti-heroes list. Naturally when a friend suggested this book, I was super excited. Finally, finally someone telling his side of the story.
To say that I was disappointed is an understatement.
Ravana despite being a very learned person, an accomplished musician, a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva, the perfect king was also ambitious, greedy, cruel, and proud, the qualities that eventually led to his downfall. But the way the author chose to sketch and develop Ravana's character made me just hate him. Now, I know the asuras' plight was no where as sorry as the author has made it out to be and it's a little difficult to believe that the Gods were so exceedingly cruel.
Neelkantan has an interesting theory going behind the book. That Ravana was a devil incarnate just because he chose to defy the Gods, live as God intended man to live. But sadly, he couldn't make it work.
