I didn’t hate it like The Maidens but I didn’t love it like The Silent Patient. The unreliable and unlikeable MC was an interesting touch. I did find it a little exhausting, however, that the narration constantly went back to feed you a little more context. But alas, that was clearly the point. In the end, it’s a fast paced thriller (mystery?) that I did have a tough time putting down.

Under The Tamarind Tree is a historical fiction like one that I’ve never read before. Learning about the history of the origin of Pakistan and India, that Partition and great migration and displacement of so many people was brand new to me. Rozeena was a strong & independent FMC in a time where that was incredibly uncommon and scoffed at. The build up between her and her three friends to the tragic night was well done mixed with the present day setting of the novel.

Although I had read the first two in this series, this third one is greatly different from the first two. A person definitely wouldn’t have to read the first two in order to read this one. I have found that this series in particular, and maybe is the case for the author in general, have a lot more slower paced plots. While I was incredibly engaged a majority of the time, it was somewhere around the 80% mark where I was starting to lose my focus of it. Some of the “conflicts” seemed to swiftly wrap up throughout the novel which may have caused my focus to sway. Nevertheless, the book’s ending was worth getting to and I enjoyed this little part of history. Although I would say more liberties were taken for the pirate aspects of the story that felt less “historical”. All this to say that I still really enjoyed it but didn’t find myself feeling as compelled to dig into the history of France, Amsterdam and the catholic/protestant conflicts like the previous two

I felt things reading this. Immediately I was pulled in by the story of a dead body and a high school girl. For a second, I was thinking this would be a thriller? Alas, it was the story of a complicated family, complicated relationships and even more complicated love. 3 generations under one roof. After the death of their matriarch, they learn to find themselves beyond the mold that the matriarch built for her sons.

It really was such a good and complicated book.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 26%.
While I appreciate the opportunity to read and review this book, I could not get into it. Maybe it was the writing style? Maybe it was how standoffish the characters seemed to be. Codependent? The hyper-fixation, yet juvenile way Sadie looked at sex was off putting
