A House of Cloaks & Daggers by Loren Little
I wanted to like this book. I feel there was a lot of potential. It had world building, but for me, the plot wasn't there. Neither was there true character development. It was interesting until after the first 10 chapters, and then I felt like I was forcing myself to read the book. I ended up skimming through the chapters after 50% in. I was at the point where I wanted to finish the book. So, I will be attempting to re-read this at a later date.
I'm not a fan of Wren, who's not even Wren. He was an ass. Yes, I know it was intentional, but I got tired of it. I'm also not a fan of Auralie. She defended herself when I felt it wasn't needed, but then would cower to comments she should have fought over. (Example: Wren insulting her or belitting her of how they were all lying to her. Or even how Wren, not really Wren, was getting 'physical' with her)
The magic system doesn't make sense, which I think it that was the point? But what really confused me was how Aura awoken her powers and already being able to "dampen" or just "control" it....I don't understand how former non magic users somehow already able control magic they never had until that moment. Irks me really.
I was given an ARC by the author, and though my review is honest and true, I wish them the best of luck.

The Mortal Queen by Ashley Metzler
Did not finish book. Stopped at 93%.

No Spice 🌶️
DNF at 93%
This book had soooooooooooooo soooo soo much potential. The beginning caught my interest; a political marriage, fae vs human, alliance and peace between the two. I had already read a similar situation (not really) for February's BOTM, so I thought this one would be promising....Boy, was I wrong. Though I stopped at 93%, I did read the end of the book and the cliffhanger was weird. I didn't hook me in. To clarify, I read the ORIGINAL indie edition (to see if there was a difference between the self publish and traditional publish), and it was just copy and paste. No corrections or edits were made. I will say, I preferred the OOP cover than the new one.
Honestly, I was bored throughout the story. I would tune out for majority of the time, and when something caught my interest, I didn't understand it because I wasn't paying attention. I looked at the reviews before deciding to DNF, and apparently I wasn't the only one who did the same.
There was no romance. Granted, I think this book is advertising that it's a slow burn. Which that's fine, but there was NO CONNECTION BETWEEN THE TWO LOVE INTERESTS WHATSOEVER. I wondered how long time has passed, so when I got to the 90% of the story, it confirmed that it's been a little bit over a year. OVER A YEAR AND NO CONNECTION BETWEEN FMC AND MMC?!
Speaking of connection, I did not like the FMC. Yes, I understand she's suppose to be spoiled and ignorant, but she was not a viable source of information. I get that she refused to not want to understand the ways of the fae, at first. HOWEVER, towards the end, she's not more open to the fae ways? But she always poking and fighting about it? She never bothered to "find the truth" as the advisor has stated. She's a plain fool. Also, can we talk about how she already knows how to control her magic? Like wtf is that? There's no real training how she was even able to control her fire magic.
The story was redundant, and no "real" point of the story. Just the whole, 'fae are savages and beast; unlike the mortals" and "don't fall into their trap" crap over and over again. WE FREAKING GET IT.
I do not plan on continuing the series.
I received an ARC from Netgallery. Though my review is honest and true, I wish the author the best of luck

No Spice, but funny innuendo quips/banter
It took me a few seconds to determine to continue reading or not, because it came in quick interesting. I ended up really liking the story than I though. For some reason this books is advertised as "enemies to lovers" it is not. Here are the main tropes:
Captor/Captive
Grumpy x Sunshine
Forced Proximity/Allies
He falls first
I enjoyed the banter, it was quite funny that i genuinely laughed at certain scenes. The quips made up for the no spice. The narrators were pretty good, but I preferred the female narrator than the male.
