Soo. I don't know exactly how to rate this novel. I've got the impression, that Richard Osman wanted to capture many different moods and things in a relatively short length. The result is (in my opinion) a somewhat complicated and genre bending book.
In the beginning I didn't quite feel it, nonetheless I did get sucked into the story and it's world, and finished it in two days (which made it easier to follow the story).
There are quite a lot of people involved and almost all of them get sections in first-person narrative, which gave readers more insight for a better understanding. It slowed the pace quite down though, you have to like that if you want to like this book.
The occurring people are very well descriped and the main characters are quite likeable, the mystery/crime aspect is well thought through, though a little complicated (you need concentration) and if you haven't read a lot of crime fiction, you probably won't know who the killer is till the end (I knew, but crime's my main source of seretonin so that's that). The comedy aspect is well done, I smiled rather often. But it's not only funny, it also deals with illness and old age and death, not in a forced way but rather a welcoming and reflective manner. So the story is not as lighthearted as I thought it would be, I don't mind though. The author also appealed quite well to my emotions, which I think made me more invested in the story. Long story short, I like this book but I don't love it. If you've made it that that far in this review, congratulations 😅.
