Was braucht mensch mehr?

I like this book. It was quite easy to read (english is not my first language) even though it's so old.
I love the scenic descriptions of this colourful and adventureous world. I can also identify myself with Bilbo a lot, like so many others, he's quite lovable and he's heroic even though he's not (at least not in the beginning).
The writing is quite funny and lighthearted and depicts real people/hobbits/dwarfs/... with real emotions with quite many problems on their journeys.
I also enjoyed being curious again and again about what would happen next, Tolkien draws the reader nicely in into the story playing in this fantastic world.
That said i don't really understand gandalfs role in all of this and how he knew how it'd pan out okay?
Anyways my biggest complaint is that this book does not just fail the bechdel test, it sh*ts on it. Not one specific female person or animal is mentioned or god forbids has a significant role. Women are only mentioned twice? and are really slight. I understand that this book is old but still. Apparently I had my hopes to high up.
In conclusion a good fantasy book that was the precursor for many more to come. But also a little bit overrated in this day and age.
