Destiny: The Official Cookbook by Victoria Rosenthal

some great recipes but destiny has such an extensive and well documented lore and weapons, some of the recipe names were disappointing. there was so much room for creativity that was just left out.

DNF at 10%. magic system is cool but nothing else seemed unique and the main character was interesting enough to keep me invested in the story. I'm not one to drop books but this was just... boring.

dropping this at 25% i wanted to like Rin and i wanted to see her succeed but she's just... so boring. she has to try harder than everyone else to get into school because of her war orphan background and yet excels at everything almost as soon as she picks it up. the supporting characters are all equally if not more boring because they all came from privileged up bringings except atlan who is obviously going to become the love interest which is mega uncomfy and the equivalent of a super senior dating a freshman. also somehow this book managed to be the most superficial YA atmosphere and then rapidly shift to the most traumatic SA descriptions, i got whiplash.

There were some cool concepts here, but the motivation and execution was just downright lazy. The main character relies so heavily on the dead wife trope, it feels like his only personality trait. And this was such a crutch, it made it's way into almost every chapter and influenced every decision. I wanted to scream when our hero was being pieced together by another woman all he could do was cry about how she wasn't his dead wife. All the characters were simply boring and disappointing, other than Sevro who is the single reason I'm giving this book 2 stars. Darrow is supposed to be so cool and special, but honestly?? He feels like a self insert of some guy trying to live out his power fantasy.
Hello I Want to Die Please Fix Me: Depression in the First Person by Anna Mehler Paperny

A great look at how North America currently addresses depression and treatment. Highlighting the failures, opportunities for success, and the importance of prioritizing humanization and autonomy for those seeking help. Absolutely would recommend this book to anyone dealing with or close to someone that has depression

I don't even have the words to describe the experience of reading this book. A heartbreaking and inspiring story, I'm so glad we got to see a happy ending.
