Such a beautiful book. It’s amazing. It’s probably difficult if you are not familiar with France and its popular culture: films, books, music. And you need to be into history. But when you have that, it’s magnificent.

I found it a difficult book; it’s also beautiful; the stories vary, sometimes lovely, sometimes hard to get into, or, perhaps, out of place.

Racist, ableist, colonialist, British-supremacist, and I am probably missing some; hints of religious fanaticism; grating to read about archaic rich people problems

I liked it; the setting, how it humanizes everyone. It’s short and interesting, an interesting style.

I liked it! Emily Wilson, and also Claire Danes, probably helped.
