Did not finish book. Stopped at 53%.
yeah, i thought a cute book on botany based on the region I briefly lived in would be a quick read, but it's killed my enjoyment of the thing

One of the best things I got from my time in Mexico was a recommendation to read Hurricane Season. Wow. What can I even say about this? It reads like water, it just carried you through this world of mystery, suspicion, pain and colour in such an easy way. It's a masterclass in storytelling, with such sophisticated characters and worldbuilding that I have just been ranting and raving to everyone who'll listen. Incredible stuff. I can't wait to see what Ms Melchor will do next.

Who doesn't want to read a book about a food critic turned cannibal?

This book was fun and well written (although at times the writing seemed a little too flowery - it seemed like the first few chapters were created from a thesaurus that had been put in a blender). The protagonist's voice is sharp and distinct although it does slowly wear down on the reader. This doesn't score higher, however, as the 'plot' is pretty stagnant. Her recollections from prison don't progress her 'stubborn' character, nor the story of her life outside of her sexual partners and murders, which also become predictable.

Indulgence through sex, murder and food (in that order) for a few hundred pages makes the great premise a little monotonous, and the one aspect of the story outside of this cycle (the MC's one friendship)...well..I have thoughts about how that was constructed and how little an impact it had on the book despite the time we spent on their journey, but if I wrote it all, I'd be here for a long time. Either way, an entertaining, mean read that I enjoyed despite its flaws.
