Available as an audiobook via the Kansas State Library.

This was an entertaining commute listen. As an aspirational gardener, I appreciated the stories of Pollan's experiences cultivating poppies and, to a lesser extent, cactus (not peyote, another non-protected variety). And as a recovering religious studies student, I thought he did a pretty good job discussing the Native American Church, although obviously if your primary purpose is to learn about the NAC, you should seek out materials produced by NAC members.

The work Anthony did with the Thula Thula elephant herd is remarkable and inspirational, and catnip to anyone who enjoys learning about how animals and humans can communicate. But the racial attitudes are far out of date for this 2022 Western reader and tend to spoil the whole.

WSU Tech staff who participated in the Spring '22 professional development DEI book club read Whistling Vivaldi and held weekly discussions. I think we all took ideas from the book that ranged from recognizing our own personal experiences to coming away with ideas to minimize stereotype threat as we work with students and colleagues.

Whistling Vivaldi is an easy, approachable read. If you've been unsure about diving into the literature surrounding race in the United States, this would be a great place to start.
