Way too much going on with chicks on the side and John Lee suddenly lacking a lot of agency. Give me one romantic subplot, please. Also a lot of n-word cropping up that nobody ever gets called on, despite some lip service to social justice issues regarding race in the deep South. Some parts seemed extraneously detailed, maybe as a means of stretching out the story. Overall, not the worst book I've ever read, but that will be the only one of this series that I will ever read.
Moderate: Biphobia, Racial slurs, Classism, Racism, Murder, Lesbophobia, and Gun violence
Minor: Sexual content, Slavery, Abortion, Alcohol, Blood, and Car accident

Too much damsel in distress and too much man withholding information for her "safety".

One of the cutest romances I've read in a while, while also being realistic/believable. Super recommend!!
Graphic: Abandonment, Sexual content, and Toxic friendship
Moderate: Drug abuse, Mental illness, Injury/Injury detail, Gun violence, and Drug use
Minor: Animal death, Grief, and Racism

I always struggle with L.A. Witt's books. The dialogue and internal monologue get repetitive, the plot is so slow, and the characters never really develop into people I would care about. The romance is also pretty flat and feels somewhat forced in places. Lots of "our gazes met" going on. If it wasn't my goal to read all of the V&V books in order, I wouldn't have bothered with this one.

While it was interesting to get a mystery story from the POV of a fairly unusual literary character, the pace was tedious and the detail were sometimes too irrelevant to the storyline for this book to be interesting from a plot perspective. I finished it because I was too far in to not finish it, but I don't have an interest in picking up the sequel.
Graphic: Body horror, Death, and Murder
Moderate: Police brutality and Toxic relationship
Minor: Gun violence, Child abuse, Blood, Colonisation, Slavery, and Alcohol
