The Making of Jonty Bloom by Barbara Elsborg

Any gay romance that involves a character who is as big a sassmouth as Jonty Bloom gets all of the stars from me. The sassier the characters even while dealing with big deal issues, the better, and Jonty is one of the sassiest I've read. Devan plays off of him beautifully, and their burgeoning relationship is swoon-worthy and heart-warming. An excellent pick for anyone new to gay romance, as well as a solid read for anyone (like myself) who has become jaded and picky about our quality romances.

It could have been about 150 pages shorter, give or take. Unnecessary drama, a greater emphasis on the Napoleonic Wars than the relationship between the characters - yeah, give me a decent historical setting and environment, but there were plenty of pages that felt like they were just shy of forcing the characters into situations just so that they'd have some additional layer of drama to deal with. My version was an audiobook and the narrator was dry and I really struggled to push through the last 2.5 hours of this book. It was also slow to start but then picked up, so it wasn't entirely terrible, but it quite dragged out at the end.
