A deeply mysterious book.  People are not who they seem.  Ancient lore is ever present, but knowledge of it is fragmented, especially by our main characters.  Lots of political intrigue.  There is a solid, tragic through plot line. The magic is interesting.   I cannot wait to start the sequel to see what happens next!

Strong recommendation to people who like chonky fantasy and enjoy finding new mysteries and answers as they go along.

A bit of a slower start, but I was completely engaged by the end.  I finished the audiobook in two days!

I found some of the modern language a bit off putting, but not to the point where it was bothersome.  I also found the choice of a female narrator to voice what was primarily a male POV interesting, but she did a good job with it.

Wow, this one just did not hit for me.  The whole need to cook, clean, sew, and generally be a domestic goddess on the part of the women characters is getting pretty tired, even though they have jobs and lives of their own. I also find the school missions to be less interesting and they made up a large part of this volume.

I did like how the slow burn of the fake marriage continues and the way that Loid steps up to domestic chores without complaint.  Also need more Bond.

I am continuing with this series on the strength of the earlier volumes, but if the series had begun this way, I would have DNFed it
