Crystal Crowned by Elise Kova
4.0
4 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
"Golden wings and suns were emblazoned upon nearly every breast. They looked to her for strength; they believed her wings would never be still, that she really had risen from the dead. It was a mantle she never wanted but had no choice in wearing. There was precious little hope, and, as the giant crystal wall closing the border of South and West came into view, Vhalla knew they needed all the hope they could get."
Crystal Crowned is the epic conclusion to the Air Awakens series. It's events lead up to the Final War. The anticipated climax that will alter the fate of all. The clash of steel, magic and monsters.
Throughout the book, I could not hold myself from mentally chanting in my head Long Live Solaris!, I was dreading every chapter as I flicked through the pages because this concluding book is definitely darker than its predecessors. Blood is spilled, death hovers nearby constantly and hope is shattered to broken pieces.
The characters were amazing, all of them, although the characters already went through excellent character arcs but this book pushes them all to the limit and tests their perseverance. There are personal struggles to overcome and difficult choices to make.
Vhalla's characterization takes a darker turn as we witness her ruthlessness. From a mere library apprentice to a mighty force, Vhalla truly had one of the best character development. She is layered in great traits, reasonable flaws and insecurities and all of this creates a deeper connection between her and me.
In all honesty, I felt a strong connection to all of the characters because of how raw and powerful their emotions were displayed throughout the book. I cared about them all and I was rooting for them. It's such a relief to find that the secondary characters play a role instead of being background characters that offer nothing to the story.
The romance definitely sweeped me off my feet. It had a great balance and the fondness and respect between Vhalla and Aldrik is truly admirable. Both went through so much and overcome so much together and although disagreements happen but it makes their relationships more realistic. They're not a perfect couple, but they are a powerful couple.
There were some many emotional moments that tugged at and shredded my heartstrings. The tension and anticipation kept me on edge and I was very pleased with how this book concluded.
This series will definitely be memorable for me and although I struggled with the first two books, my heart still aches knowing now that I have to part with those wonderful characters.

Somewhere I'll Find You by Lisa Kleypas
4.0
4 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
"How strange that we both wanted to be free of each other for so long...and just when we are, all we want is to be together again."
Somewhere I'll Find You is a heart-fluttering love story between Julia Hargate, a daughter of a wealthy man whom fled the confines of her family and society to follow her dreams of becoming an actress, And Damon, Lord Savage and the future Duke of Leeds, a man weighed down by his responsibilities towards his family and their fortune.
Julia and Damon's fathers arranged a marriage agreement involving them when they were only children; Julia being 4 and Damon being 7.
"I was sold for the price of a name, and Lord Savage for a fortune. Father secured a title for his daughter, and the Savages were saved from financial ruin. And all they had to do was sacrifice their firstborn children."
Both grew up dreading the matrimonial chains wrapped around them and the inevitable future in which a day will come when Damon must claim his wife. The free-spirited Julia decides to break those cruel chains and flee to the dazzling world of theatre despite the shadows of shame following her for choosing an unfitting profession for a well-bred lady and thus the reputable and glamorous actress known as Mrs. Jessica Wentworth came into existence.
In a twist of fate, May Day celebrations lured Damon out of the confines of his family's honey-colored castle towards the village bursting with laughter and the sound of music. A particularly radiant girl caught his eye and for a moment believed her to be a sprite that appeared from the Forest and would fade at any moment.
Comically, the garland of flowers flew from her head and landed at the feet of Damon... Julia and Damon meet for the first time as strangers and the the sparks of attraction encompasses them both.
"Why did you come outside, sir? Was it to take the air or watch the dancing?"
"To find you."
Little did they know that both of them are Husband and Wife.
To Damon, he is intrigued by this forest sprite and wishes to rid of the burden of Julia Hargate not only for the sake of his future and his desire to marry for love, but the fact that both of them were victims that were robbed of their choice to choose whom they want.
"She would live as Jessica Wentworth, and bury all traces of Julia Hargate—and the secret that had haunted her all her life."
I absolutely enjoyed this book and the fact that I've read Because You're Mine, the second book in the Capitol Theatre duology, I've already met Julia and Damon before and I liked them a lot so I knew I would adore them and enjoy their love story in this book.
I am pleased to say that I was not disappointed, not at all.
The Goodreads rating might've lowered my expectations, but I was captivated from the very first page until the last page.
Lisa Kleypas never disappoints when it comes to the characterizations of both her heroines and heroes. Julia was an amazing heroine, the epitome of empowerment and independence. She was a woman who knew what she wanted, that is until Damon comes into the picture. Damon was a dreamy man with a passionate heart despite his stoic and cool exterior.
Their chemistry made my heart flutter and I'm constantly rooting for them to take a step towards one another. Both torn by not only a future not of their choosing but also the fact that they are polar opposites in their interests and aspirations. After all she worked for, Julia cannot simply give it all up to become the wife Damon and Damon will not want to have a wife flaunting herself on stage to the world.
I enjoyed the presence of the secondary characters in the book especially Logan Scott's intimidating presence. Being a member of Capitol Theatre, Julia is always interacting with Logan, a man known to be cold as fish, and he always puts his theatre first. It was fun to see this side of Logan since I've witnessed his transformation in the second book. William, Damon's brother, was such an entertaining character that stole all the spotlights every time he made an appearance.
What I truly loved about the Romance here is that both Julia and Damon clashed until they found the missing pieces that would make them fit as a couple. They did not sweep their issues and secrets under the rug. It was admirable to see that Damon did not degrade Julia for the profession she chose. They are such a perfect couple despite their flaws and their clashes every now and then.
The only issue I think the book suffered from is the pacing sometimes. It could've been shorter but the I felt thag the author kept prolonging some scenes in the story.
Overall, this was such a fantastic romance read that I recommend if you love a sprinkle of angst of the romance.

Losing Hope by Colleen Hoover
4.0
4 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I've been let down by this life one too many times and quite frankly, I'm tired of losing hope.
Losing Hope is the sequel to Hopeless and it's retold from Holder's perspective.
Although in the first book we've seen how the story unfolds but experiencing it all over again through Dean Holder was devastatingly emotional.
I won't spill much in this review to keep it spoiler-free but if you think Hopeless was sad then be ready to be wrecked by Losing Hope.
Holder gave us a new perspective to the story and it especially shed light on the heavy weight he had been carrying since his childhood.
I felt the rawness and intensity of his grief and guilt. It gripped my heart and almost tore it to pieces.
Although I was hoping to see an extension of the story after Hopeless, but this one managed to fill in the blanks and give sense to some of Holder's actions in the first book.
Yet again, Colleen Hoover manages to stir the emotions of her readers and bring them to the brink of tears... she may already did.

The Last Waltz by Mary Balogh
3.0
3 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Last Waltz tells the story of lost love and second chances.
I've read a few books from Mary Balogh which I've enjoyed, and I have to be honest this wasn't her best.
Despite it being a romance, the story felt very dull and the romance between the couple suffered from a proper build up.
There was no smooth build up to the rekindled romance between Christina, the 28-year-old widowed Countess of Wanstead and the new Earl of Wanstead, Gerard Percy.
Gerard and Christina were former sweethearts when they were younger, however due to unforeseen circumstances, Christina had to marry Gerard's cousin Gilbert, the Earl of Wanstead. Heartbroken, Gerard leaves to Canada and Christina moves on with her new marital life.
After 9 years of marriage, Gilbert passes away and with no male heir to take over Thornwood, the title goes to Gerard making him the new master that must return to England and claim his new role. Gerard must also face his past knowing that he will have to confront the widowed Countess and his former sweetheart.
I can't deny that I felt a lot for what Christina had suffered through. How her choices to flee from suffering, led to more of it. How her fear of reliving her traumatic childhood led her to a life of even more misery.
The author highlights an important theme in the book which is domestic abuse. She showcased the behavior of a victim in Christina accurately. From a young girl full of life to a miserable woman.
Christina—his beautiful, sunny-natured, warm, passionate Christina—had been the terrorized victim of a wife-beater, who had hidden his vicious-ness behind a mask of religion and morality. And now she blamed herself.
I only wished the author did not prolong Christina's sadness.

The Wallflower Wager by Tessa Dare
4.0
4 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
"I've made a career of ruining fortunes, but I've never ruined a woman. I damned well won't start with you."
When in need of a lighthearted read that combines both swoon-worthy and humor, you can always rely on Tessa Dare and her books.
The Wallflower Wager is the third installment in the Girl Meets Duke series and while it can be read as a stand-alone yet I urge you to start with the first book because you do not want to the fantastic characters in the other books and they do make cameos in each book.
The story begins with 26-year-old Lady Penelope Campion, an Earl's daughter and a renowned animals lover. She has a touch of motherhood tenderness and care towards the animals she rescues yet society do not view her as a vivacious and kind-hearted woman she is, but a spinster living alone with a dozen of cats.
One fine evening, Penny was led on a chase by her pet parrot Delilah who sneaks into the neighboring residence inhabited by a new master. Penny is determined to catch her Parrot and slips inside the quiet residence in hopes that the new master had not settled in yet. After her merry chase, Penny finds herself in a bedroom and to her embarrassment she soon finds out who the bedroom belongs to when a looming dark figure passes through the connecting door.
Clad in his towel only, Gabriel Duke finds a mysterious woman on his bed and to his frustration turns out to be the Lady Penelope Campion, his neighbor. Gabe is man that cares for his finances only and figures out soon that the barnyard that is Penny's residence is will lower his current property's value and must find a solution to such prospeterous life led by this lady and her animals. A former street urchin, Gabe found a way to sneak at the top of society through unethical methods which made him aristocracy's most detestable villain that earned the title the Duke of Ruin.
What can spark between a tender-hearted and loving noblewomam and the ruthless and sinfully wealthy former street urchin? Surely not love? Could it?
I adored both Penny and Gabe and my heart fluttered whenever they had a moment together. Witnessing polar opposites fall head over heels for each other is one of my guilty pleasures. Their romance made me swoon many times, I just adore that regardless of society, Penny did not view her attraction to Gabe as something shameful or repulsive. She follow her heart's desires unapologetically.
It's not a Tessa Dare book without some iconic humor sprinkled throughout the story generously. I had a good laugh during many scenes and especially at the one where the poor men including Gabe, Ash, and Chase were struggling with helping a goat give birth.
I must say that I loved the second half of the book since it had a bit of everything and there is a secondary plotline that was included in the story that highlighted on a serious issue and Dare handled it in an excellent way despite the story being a light-hearted one.
It's always lovely to see the cameos of the former charactersEmma, Ash, Alex, Chase added more to the humor in the story and I adore their friendship with Penny, they have been nothing but supporting towards her.
This book has been a delight and if you're looking for a book that will lift your spirits up, well... what are you waiting for? Pick this book up!

Brave by Jennifer L. Armentrout

"You'd kill yourself to save him?"
"In a heartbeat."
Brave is the final book in the Wicked Trilogy and it takes us on a darker route than its predecessors.
I must say that the hook in this book for me was the tension building towards the climax and the plot-twists that made me pause reading and go Oh.
I like how the Fae in this world aren't necessarily vicious, they come in all shades of grey just like humans. I have to say that the Fae setting in this book needed to be fleshed out more especially when the two courts of Summer and Winter were introduced.
The romance is steamier and much more swoon-worthy because I was finally truly enjoying the chemistry between Ivy and Ren.
If you've read my Torn review you probably know that I couldn't connect with Ren but this time round he was much more likable to me.
Ivy underwent some great development in this book, and I liked how JLA handled her PTSD and the impact it had on her. Quite a few find Ivy annoying because she is a little oblivious and quick to take action but she's quite relatable in that sense.
Overall, Brave concludes the trilogy with an impressive ending. Yes, I've yet to read more of JLA's work and while this is had not become a favorite of mine but it's a memorable one with memorable characters I'm looking at you Tink.

King of the South by Calia Read

But that was the truth. If Livingston was the king of the South, I was the queen of lies. From my deceit and his charm, we could build a kingdom that would last for centuries.
King of the South is a swoon-worthy historical romance of a fiery wild woman and a wicked and broken war hero engulfed in the burning flames of love.
Charleston – 1919
The Great War ended but the tragedy of the blood-soaked years lingered. 39-year-old Livingston Lacroix returned home grief-ridden after witnessing the deaths of his fellow soldiers and the news of his childhood and best friend's death, Miles Pleasonton. With wars comes deaths and trauma and the Pleasontons were not spared. 28-year-old Raina Pleasonton has no living family members except for her mother. Both Pleasonton ladies were surprised to find that Miles had left his sister a dowry in his will and appointed his best friend as the executor.
Rainey is outraged that her brother's best friend and long-time nemesis has control over her dowry and that she must wed within sixty days. For Livingston is nothing but a roguish charmer and a man she had been in war with since her childhood.
Livingston is baffled, for what man will have the strong-headed and too wild to tame Rainey for a wife. The very same woman that pulled an arrow at him when she was younger in a rage. To him, being at war was easier than being near that hellion of a woman.
If someone is not prepared for Livingston and me, you can feel as though you've been swept into a hurricane. By the time we're done snarling at one another, all the poor, unsuspecting people around us are a bit lost, scratching their heads, and saying, "what just occurred?"
Despite their 11-years age gap, both of them have shared a solid and unique bond since they were young even if that bond sprouted from plotting wars against one another.
"God be with the world with which we live in," I would mutter whenever he left because wherever he walked, there was potential for a trail of broke hearts.
I must say my reading experience was delightful because I've had a taste of every aspect of a book I could enjoy, the humor was spot on! I loved the banter and bickering between Rainey and Livingston. Their witty humor and sarcasm were so entertaining, it takes me a while for characters to grow on me but I instantly liked both. Livingston interactions with his twin-brother and sister-in-law were comedic I didn't think I'd laugh this much.
I love that both Rainey and Livingston are characters with different layers to them. Rainey can be too wild but she is also passionate while Livingston is a rogue but he has a darker side to him which has to do with his PTSD from his time at the war. It marks them as characters with such depth.
Livingston is Charleston’s number one womanizer. I am Charleston’s untamed debutante.
This book serves a platter of slow-burn chemistry, enemies-to-lovers goodness, and a passionate love that will keep you on the edge of swooning.
For all my romance enthusiasts out there, you will have your fill of a heated romance between two long-time foes that unfolds beautifully and chaotically.
Throughout the years, we have found ourselves at war with one another, but with love, we found peace.
Note that this book is a spin-off from its original series The Surviving Time. But it can be read as a stand-alone and I had no problem understanding the context of the story. I'm intrigued by the original series since it has time-travel romance.
This is the first book I read by Calia Read and I have to compliment her flowy and immersive writing because I had issue delving straight into the story and she kept me hooked.
Ah... you must be wondering why this book has the title King of the South? . . . It is a title well-earned by Livingston in 1902 thanks to his dangerous charm and gorgeous looks.
This is a must-read if you're a fan of historical romances!
