Gorgeous. Gothic. Got me fucked up.
Finished it and just had to hold the closed book in my arms for a minute, swaying like I’d read a love letter. And maybe it was a little bit of that. I feel like this book was made specifically and intentionally for me—that it said all the things I wanted it to and went in all the directions I didn’t even know to ask for but adored. Mariana Enriquez is incredibly tuned in that way. It’s my 2nd read from her and I could not recommend her work enough. Constantly astounded by her caliber of imagination and nuance to craft not only a uniquely macabre world but a believably paralleling one that hits all the notes and commentary it needs to in order to be as beautifully haunting and compelling as it is.
Simplemente perfecto, I loved it. 🖤

Appreciated more than enjoyed. Greed is just such a violent disease. Being Indigenous in America feels like a never-ending upheaval sometimes. Reading this book conjured a whole lotta that, but I am grateful to have read this story still. A story that I think every American should know/be taught. It's a plight all of us as Indigenous people are connected to/by/and still fight.
The book in a technical sense is also a surprisingly accessible one, which for the amount of information was an understandably difficult task to simplify well. Commendable. However if you, like me, are not a true crime reader, I would still recommend jotting down the names of folks as you come across them because I definitely got a little confused in certain parts mid-way where there was a lot of interactions and recalling.

I appreciate the heart of this story a ton, and it's intense layers.
Like Shrek, its an onion (it has layers!!!), and like an onion, it made me cry. Sob. Several times. Chunky Studio Ghibli tears.
On top of that, as someone who's usually not a fan of following action scenes in novels, this fucking rocked on that front too. It maybe changed my thoughts on it altogether. It can be good people! This is the first I've ever read a book like this and I easily stayed engaged the whole time. I never, not once, knew what was coming next either.
It had it's moments that could have been omitted, especially for its length, but overall a solid emotional ride well navigated and executed. This book has brought my soul something necessary and unreplicable that I'll be ruminating on for the next few weeks. Definitely a new M. L. Wang fan.

Gosh, there were many interesting bits and bobs throughout this book... but they never became much more than that. The heart of this novel is fascinating yet for a world that is presented as vast and complex as it is, the scope of the story is actually quite restrained. Ultimately, not much happens and there are a whole lotta words for a whole little happenings--which could still have packed a critical punch-- but unfortunately those little happenings were not very engaging to read either.
