The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

WOW. I have no other words to describe this dark and thrilling tale. I was stunned by the world-building and imagery used. It made me want to be a part of that world, but at the same time, I was terrified of it. The book opens with murder, immediately telling us that this is not the faeries in your grandmother’s garden. These faeries are real and cruel. I liked Jude, but I was not a big fan of her sisters. Cardan is another complex character, and I did honestly not expect the twist at the end.

I rate this one 5/5 ink pots.

Between the Sea and Stars by Chantal Gadoury

I received the e-ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This is my first undersea adventure book and I truly enjoyed it. The way the merrow world is built is so natural, it makes it seem as if the undersea kingdom could actually exist in our world. It’s a wonderful spin on the classic Little Mermaid, edging closer to the original Anderson. It’s a darker tale filled with loss, sorrow and wonder. Lena, the main protagonist, dreams of a world above the sea, desperate to see it. One fateful evening her dream comes true, but not in the way she expected.

Lena is a literal fish out of water in the human world. She’s like all of us, dreaming of something more than what society wants to give her. The merrow society, much like the human society, expects women to stay at home and raise the kids. I had hoped the merrows would be more progressive than humans since it’s the women who feature in all the legends and stories.

I enjoyed Lena’s time in both the human world and under the sea. Gadoury creates beautiful and believable interactions between the merrow people and sea creatures. However, the story was too slow. I kept waiting for it to pick up and gain speed, but then it was over. I also wasn’t a big fan of the ending, I felt like the book ended where the halfway point should have been. All in all, it wasn’t a bad read, the world building was great and Gadoury has a fresh and clean writing style, but the story lacked intrigue and more diverse characters.

The Bone Roses by Kathryn Lee Martin

I was given a free copy of this book to review by the publisher.

I loved this book. It was a stunning read. The snow-covered, post-apocalyptic world was so clear and vivid. Martin is a truly good writer. She paints a vivid picture of how harsh the life in the Kingdom is. The story starts with a bang, showcasing Rags' skills and how formidable she truly is. I'm not a cowgirl, but I enjoyed the western theme very much. The characters were beautifully crafted and I loved the descriptions of the world.

Martin managed not to bore us with exposition, not bothering to tell us Rags' backstory and instead letting it slowly drip through the book. I loved it, every time I learned something new about Rags I felt like it was completely natural and earned. The rest of the characters were great as well. I loved Colton and Henny and wished we could have seen more of their relationship.

The whole book revolves around the town of Rondo, which at times got a bit boring. There where I few scenes that I felt were unnecessary or dragged on for too long, and I found myself skipping over a lot of text. Overall it's a gripping adventure that had me glued to the book and I can't wait for the second one.

You can read my full review on my blog, as well as a Q&A with the author, Candace Robinson. www.yourwordsmyink.com

I loved everything about this book. It reminded me of the Goosebumps I read as a child, only it was more dark, creepy and dangerous. I loved the setup, the Glass Vault and the characters. Robinson pulled my heart out and stepped on it, but I enjoyed every minute of it. I could rave about this book forever if someone let me. The characters are well crafted, the story flows excellently and the descriptions are beautifully macabre.

This book made me nostalgic for my childhood, curled up with a scary book, and made me fear adulting all over again. If you enjoy books with twist endings, and oh boy do I mean TWIST ENDINGS, unpredictable plots and lovable characters, this is the book for you.

If I wasn’t reading this book on my phone, I would have thrown it out of a window. My jaw dropped at the end. Never has a book ever had this good of an unpredictable twist. I absolutely loved it!
