In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado

While this book is about a difficult topic, I found it a beautiful experience to read. It’s sad and raw, but also intelligent and clever. The author is very clear in what her life has been like, what she has been through and struggled with. 

In The Dream House recounts experiences full of emotion and with reflection. I love how each chapter is a different way to describe the dream house, while also following each previous chapter perfectly. This way each chapter is contained in its own, but also part of the story. It works very well, as it gives you different lights to see the story in.

Books about families and what makes that family work, is a theme I love to read about. This book is about family and what they have experienced in their lives. These experiences feel lived in and real, which makes it interesting to read about all these characters and what drives them. They each live their lives, while still being very connected to each other. All of them tell their life stories to the main character. However sometimes it is confusing to know at what time this part of the story is set. Added to that is the underlying story of the main characters mother, who is organizing a living wake - and no one knows why, but fears the worst and for the longest time in the book, I was fearing with them. 

The magical realism part adds another level to the story and gives it depth, but also adds a layer of creativity. The powers are also not predictable and aren’t the main focus of the story. It’s just there. The last half of the book dragged a bit and could have been quicker. This could have worked better if it was shorter. The final few chapters were beautiful and gave this book a wonderful ending, full of love and changes. Overall, it’s an easy read and I enjoyed my time with this family and their experiences.

Vanaf de eerste pagina voelde dit aan als een boek, dat perfect bij mij past. Het is sentimenteel, gaat over de verbinding en betekenis in relaties tussen personen en literatuur. Een boek vol herinneringen. 

Bovendien gaat over het alledaags leven en hoe mensen dat dagelijks leven ervaren. Het gaat ook over passie voor een project en literatuur en het nodige doorzettingsvorming - tot het uiterste. Het was een enorm aangenaam boek om te lezen. Het voelde als een gesprek, iemand, die een ervaring deelde met jou. Een keuze van het hoofdpersonage irriteerde me wel enorm, gelukkig bleek het niet al te veel plaats in te nemen in het verhaal. 

Het voelde ook enorm persoonlijk. Vooral door de beschreven familiebanden en hoe alles dat het hoofdpersonage doet, hem doet denken aan zijn vader. Dan ook nog eens de gebeurtenis zorgen voor een boek met veel leven en emotie. De laatste pagina’s waren hartverscheurend.

Dit boek is een fictie boek, dat aanvoelt aan als een non - fictie. Misschien is het doel om een waarschuwing om aandachtig en kritisch te zijn. Toch vond ik het boek vooral verwarrend. 

In de eerste helft is een boek met een waarschuwing voor manieren waarop wetenschap wordt misbruikt en hoe onschuldige ontdekkingen leiden tot catastrophes wanneer ze op een foute manier worden gebruikt. Deze boodschap moet je er wel zelf een beetje inzien, aangezien de schrijver vooral een soort opsomming of omschrijving van een bepaalde ontdekking beschrijft, maar er niet echt een diepere betekenis aanhangt, terwijl deze kansen er wel zijn. Dit vond ik best interessant en als hierop was verder gegaan, had ik dit boek waarschijnlijk 4 sterren gegeven. 

In de tweede helft van het boek wordt vooral verteld over het leven van bepaalde wiskundigen en hun ontdekkingen, maar mist een diepgang, vooral omdat dit boek geen non-fictie is. Ik snap niet wat de auteur wil bereiken met wat er wordt geschreven. Het eindigde een beetje teleurstellend.

Since the Phantom of the Opera is one of my favourite subjects to dive into I have decided to read different translations. This Bantam translation by Lowell Bair cut some of the very flowery language and replaced it with some more direct - but still beautiful writing. I will admit that I missed some of those flowery writing details, when i compare to my experience reading the Alexander Teixeira de Mattos translation. I enjoyed this translation and my reread of this story. My feelings on this are still the same as my previous read of this story. 

White Nights by Fyodor Dostoevsky

This story fits a hopeless romance and immense sadness and desperation in these few pages. Best of all, it’s filled with wonderful quotes. It’s about someone desperate for connection and friendship/love. As someone who struggles with friendships I could relate a lot to this main character. While one part dragged a little bit too long and in certain parts the writing was a bit too confusing (although I assume it might have been a language barrier thing) the focus on a man that’s lost in life and yearns to genuine human connection, made me emotional.

 Dit boek was geweldig. Ondanks zijn 700+-pagina's was ik geen seconde verveeld. Verrassend was de schrijfstijl heel vlot om te lezen en las ik met gemak 50 tot 100 pagina’s in één keer.

De personages zijn diepgaand en interessant, omdat het duidelijk is dat iedereen zijn eigen waarden of ideeën heeft. Het is ook telkens duidelijk waarom ze iets wel of niet doen en vanwaar die keuze komt. De verschillende perspectieven zorgen ervoor dat elke verhaallijn zijn moment krijgt om verder te groeien Al deze verhaallijnen zorgen ook voor een drukke wereld, waarin er veel gebeurd en dat zorgt ervoor dat de wereld van Westeros ook vorm krijgt. 

De serie heb ik al gezien, ookal is het een tijd geleden, maar ik vond in dit boek wel een paar hints terug van wat er kan gebeuren, doordat ik al weet wat er (mogelijks) kan gebeuren. Toch beperkte de kennis vanuit de serie mijn leeservaring totaal niet. 

Twee zaken vond ik wat minder leuk, maar wegen eigenlijk niet op tegen hoeveel ik van dit boek heb genoten. Sommige personages zijn heel jong en meestal zie ik niet waarom ze zo jong zijn. Volgens mij had Daenerys min of meer dezelfde groei meegemaakt als ze meerderjarig was geweest. Een tweede dingetje was dat er soms te veel namen worden genoemd, waar het (voor mij) niet echt nodig is.

This was a short story, but it packs a punch. It calls you out and lets you think about ethics and society. 

It’s written as if it’s told to you, with questions directed to you, which I liked. It slows you down while reading to reflect of what is written.
