I guess i don’t really know what to say about this. i’m torn between being touched by a story about friendships and love and being  absolutely confused by all the stuff that happens around that. honestly, read it, it'll keep you entertained and it’s exciting to see what this book does to you.

one of the worst crime books i’ve read so far. none of the characters were likeable, all arrogant and annoying in their own way. story’s super flat, i wasn’t intrigued to know what happened at any point. when the storys finally cleared up, it happens so fast & with a weird motive… or better said, motive's okay BUT for it to work, you'd have to focus more on the dynamics between the characters, which wasn’t the focus at all. couldn’t even tell you what the focus in the book even was… bored the hell out of me.

a lot of whys: (to quote another review)
why is there so much homophobia? it adds nothing to the plot
why is there incest?
why is julian intriguing to them?
why is henry intriguing to them?
why isn’t the book like 200 pages shorter?
honestly, if you're into the dark academia vibes mixed with crime, murder and interesting power dynamics between friends and teachers: if we were villains by m. l. rio is exactly that & much better.

I loved the first book of the series - but afterwards it just went downhill, sadly. “The vanishing season” is the worst. I struggle to call it a thriller or something like that because the crime itself is in the background of the story like 85% of the time. the killer is identified within 5 pages, and his motive is okay.. nothing compared to the gardener, obviously. while this book did make me cry and laugh - i don’t read thrillers to laugh at jokes from teenagers or cry because i can relate to the talk of abuse. Too many characters added to the main team, which are all so detailed they nearly all become  “main characters”, it was hard to keep track. I learned to love the small line between soft and humorous bickering and crime/ the fbi work but this felt too focused on everything BUT the crime. Still love the characters though.
