This is a very inconsistent attempt at exploring artificial intelligence, families and adoption, race, and gender, but the pacing and later (highly offensive) plot twist in the second half of the book completely derailed me from any pleasant reading experience, or wanting to have any meaningful conversations. The art is, however, consistent, and does a good job at carrying this to a higher rating, otherwise.

The offensive plot twist pertains to:

This could've been quite an amazing prequel had they split this into two issues, or done one oversized issue. The concepts at play, as well as the environments, tension, and art, are generally solid, but it was obviously rushed, and you could tell the team was hindered by the small page count restriction.

Medieval Suicide Squad - fucking fantastic concept! But, the weak worldbuilding and generic characters really underwhelmed me. Hopefully gets better in future issues!

Not the most unique premise (so far), but the worldbuilding has me intrigued. Though, this issue is a bit on the shorter side.

This is a pretty solid first issue by a powerhouse team; I'll definitely need to continue reading! Felt somewhat reminiscent of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or the Diablo series.

Gorgeous art and a pretty interesting premise, Blackbird is definitely a series I need to read more of!

I really love the premise of this, but regrettably I didn't enjoy the dialogue, characters, or pacing. The art was also blurry/too muddled and I found myself rereading/going back to a previous panel thinking I was missing something.

A kawaii kaiju adventure sounds like something I'd really love, but unfortunately this didn't really do it for me. The humor and dialogue landed flat, and I felt like I was missing something, even though this is the first issue. It felt a bit rushed, and, in my opinion, didn't do a lot to introduce you to the world. The art and colors were pretty solid, though.

This is a continuation of the first volume, but unfortunately it was quite a bit more rushed, and will probably leave more confusion in its wake than clarity. I did really enjoy the exploration of the Chozo, as well as Samus' further character development, but there was far too much content squished into this single volume. I really wish they had spent more time on this manga and split this into a third volume.
