Just a lovely book! An interesting mix of poems paired with artwork in a different graphic style for each poem- one of my favorite's was Maya Angelou's Caged Bird over Gee's Bend quilts. I enjoyed every one of the spreads, and this is definitely a book I'll go back to again and again.

I do not read poetry often. I think, since I am not in the habit of reading it, I get too wrapped up in the rhythm and structure and pace - if there is no punctuation, I will ZOOM through and feel breathless even in my own mind. Then I’ll pause and try again. I am sure that, with practice, it would get easier, but I just generally prefer to LISTEN to poetry than to read it myself.

This book really appealed to me when I saw it because it visualizes beautiful poems in comics format. This way, I can read the poem with the pace and flow the author intends with the added bonus of seeing it come to life before my eyes.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I think I will return to it often when I want a bit of respite or just want to the opportunity to be a bit more contemplative. Peters organized the poems under loose themes, and he employs a variety of styles to illustrate them, based on the theme, the author, and the subject matter. Most of the poems were either only vaguely familiar or completely unfamiliar to me, but all of them were beautiful and gave me pause. And the illustrations were such an added richness! I did not always agree with the way Peters illustrated them, but that is part of the fun. Certainly, his illustrations added depth and nuance to my experience of each poem.

My favorites from the book are the ones pictured here - Juke Box Love Song, by Langston Hughes, may my heart always be open by e.e. cummings, and Birches by Robert Frost.
dark hopeful inspiring lighthearted slow-paced

I enjoyed Julian Peters’ interpretation of poems into artwork. My favorite was Birches by Robert Frost, as I always imagined it similarly in my head.

Poems to See By by Julian Peters brings to life 24 classic poems in new ways. As with all poetry and poetry interpretation, not everyone will love the artistic interpretation of each poem. But as someone who is drawn to visual art, I was blown away. Peters usings a variety of comic styles to depict each poem. And like our taste for some poets or poetry styles over others, a few did not resonate with me. e.e., cummings' May My Heart Always Be Open drawn like a New York Times comic strip was not my favorite. And yet, it allows for particular themes to be pulled forth.

My favorite include Emily Dickinson "Hope" is the Thing with Feathers drawn in black and white pencil with "Hope" being the only color floating through. Maya Angelou's Caged Bird is depicted as a beautiful quilt that I would love to see in actual fabric and stitch. Robert Hayden's Those Winter Sundays where red warm the blue driving out the cold. And finally, Carl Sandburg's Buffalo Dusk watercolor where the buffalo slowly disappear to be replaced with business and industry.

I would highly recommend Poems to See By to graphic novel enthusiasts and those wanting to explore another's interpretation of classic poetry.

adored it. i never knew how much i loved poetry until now. the drawings are gorgeous and the poems chilling. i recommend it strongly.

This collection of art and poetry is charming, emotional, and absolutely beautiful! Julian Peters' art is mesmerizing, especially when you turn page after page and realize that the art for every poem is entirely different; each is magnificent in its own right and perfectly tailored to the words and emotions in the poem. The art is so vastly different from one poem to the next: one is watercolor, the next is pencil, one is all in black and white, the next all color. It's amazing! It's hard to pick favorites, but mine are Somewhere Or Other and Jukebox Love Song. A fantastic collection for anyone who loves both poetry and art!

This was a beautiful read. The author did a fantastic job illustrating these poems. While some were very straightforward, and were exactly what I had always pictured in my head - the others, and in my opinion the best ones, were the ones he went in a wildly different direction, but it fit so perfectly. To be completely honest, there were a few pages I would gladly own as prints to put on my walls at home, if it were an option.

Highly recommended. I think this would work well for those that enjoy poetry, as well as for those that are not generally poetry fans - as the illustrations add an extra bit of beauty to otherwise well loved poems.

I got a copy of this book through NetGalley. All opinions are my own

I loved the idea of this book when I saw it in NetGalley as an arc. Classic poems in the form of comics. So interesting and original, for me. Overall, I really liked the way the author interpreted some of the poems, there were really good drawings and everything. However, I would have loved to read first the poem in its classical form and then see the artist's interpretation.
