A phenomenal look at women’s prisons, race, gender and queerness. It shaped my view of the west village and is such a profound understanding of lesbianism and queer history. It is both academic and personal with great storytelling and humanizing incredible and interesting stories.

I really enjoyed this! While it seems like this is kind of a narrow lens for queer and trans history, it’s actually the opposite. Hugh Ryan has excellent prose too and the story is incredibly interesting for someone who’s ever been to New York’s Greenwich Village. This is essential history that it feels like a lot of our movement has forgotten.
