i think ms hardy would be an EXCELLENT d&d dungeon master because her pacing is swift, her plotlines all tie up neatly at the end, and her worldbuilding and magic systems are interesting, but the characters themselves don't get to shine as brightly in comparison. i think aylin in particular was a very lovely character who repeatedly got the short end of the stick because all the focus was on nya racing from A to B to C. the romance was also pretty weak, since her romantic interest was barely given a personality or moments to shine. hell, even tali had a fascinating side plot that we never really explored or even resolved. nya eclipses everyone forever :/ still an enjoyable read and nicely written

I will do my best to keep this spoiler free, so don’t worry if you haven’t read it yet.

Ah, the bittersweetness of ending a fantastic series. The final installment did not disappoint, and it had all the aspects of the other books that I enjoyed so well. There is the strong heroine first of all, and the well developed minor characters, the unique setting – I absolutely love the idea of a fantasy set in a tropical environment, and the whole moral aspect of the book where the Nya has to constantly make choices about how she should and should not use her unique powers.

I will say, that if you haven’t read the other books The Shifter and Blue Fire first, you should. The author goes back to re-explain some things, but I think someone who doesn’t already know the story would be very lost.

I loved the different twists and turns the plot had in the book, it was exciting and engaging, but didn’t feel forced, which is something that I’ve run into lately.

The great thing about this book is that it can be compared to other YA novels that are out there, but Janice Hardy always puts her own spin on things. Because, yes, Nya could be compared to Katniss very easily, and Tali to Prim, but they really are unique and altogether different though they share certain similarities (that wasn’t a spoiler by the way, those similarities could be gleaned from previous books as well). Plus, I like reading characters that in some ways resemble each other and see how different authors approach things – which segues me to my next topic: Danello.

What a breath of fresh air he is. After all the dark, mysterious, self-loathing, disturbed, picture perfect Abercrombie model love interests that have popped up on the YA scene lately, I can not tell you how great it is to have a down-to-earth, steady eddy fictional boy-friend for once. Not that I hate ALL characters who fit the former description, I do have my exceptions *cough* Jace *cough* I’m just saying it gets old after a while and it’s nice to have variety.

In conclusion, this series is great if you haven’t read it I highly recommend that you do. Yes, I can hear your groaning as you look and the looming mountain on your bedstand/GoodReads account that is your TBR pile, but seriously, it’s worth it.

This book is soooo good! Danello and Nya belong together!!! I swear I almost cried about Quenji and especially Soek......

After a while I got a little tired of how every little single thing revolved around the main character. Not only was the main character approaching the world as if this were true (which is common enough among teenagers to be believable) but it was actually true of the world, and more power was accumulated in a single person than should be healthy and manageable.

There was still a lot of hatred between Baseeri and Gevegians that was talked about in extremely black and white ways with insufficient nuance. After the middle of book 2, this type of thinking was better pointed out as problematic, but not perfectly, and I wouldn't describe any of it as a healthy role model. A situation to observe, perhaps, but nothing to imitate.

Still lots of solid action, but less compelling moral dilemmas.

A pretty good series overall. Interesting premise, enjoyable, hard to put down, but not going to make my top recommendation lists.

I wish I could write a long review saying why you should read this book (along with the rest of the series), but I can't seem to find the words. All I can say is trust me, this book is fantastic. Loved it.

What a fitting ending to this trilogy. I have to admit this is one of the most fun series I have read in a while. I really enjoy the world Hardy has created. It is so rich and detailed and interesting. I am really intrigued the concept of shifting or taking pain from others. I find it fascinating that it can be weaponized. Nya is such a strong, fearless young woman it is hard not to root for her.

Darkfall takes place after the events of The Shifter and Blue Fire. Nya and the rest are hiding out from the Duke. The must go back to Geveg and save their home before the Duke destroys everything in his way to total power. This is a book about war and what happens in a war. People die, people choose sides and people rise to the occasion as heroes. I am glad Hardy represented a war realistically; not everyone is going to survive, some may be hurt beyond help and sometimes you have to do terrible things to survive and defeat the enemy. Nya learns all of these lessons in this book, but despite everything there is hope at the end. Things end on a positive note. I love how strong and confident Nya becomes at the end of this series. She is the hero of the rebellion and she owns it. She reclaims her place in the world and makes no excuses. Definitely a series I would recommend.

Again Nya was the strongest female heroine I've ever seen. Darkfall is brilliant, great plot, characters, themes. It's a little slow to begin but hell the ending makes up for it later! Thank you Janice Hardy for reminding me of a well written fantasy novel! I just loved your world.

These aren't the kind of books that start a fandom, but they are good nonetheless. Nya is a likable protagonist. She struggles internally with her decisions, making her a more likable and realistic protagonist. This book is geared toward younger audiences, so her and Danello's relationship was a little anticlimatic but cute. That's pretty much it.

4 out of 5 stars because it wasn't super awesome but I didn't really have any complaints.
