I do not think I have ever taken longer to read a book. I continue to be amazed by Rushdie's ability to put more in one sentence than most authors can say in a page. (Of course to be fair, some of his sentences ARE one page.) I enjoyed the story and admired the writing, and got part of what he has packed between the lines. I am still reading ABOUT the book to find the things I missed. It will be awhile before I have the courage to take on another one of his books. Maybe someday I'll try The Satanic Verses to see what the fuss was all about. I think perhaps the Fatwa was issued because the Imam got stuck in one of those Rushdie sentences and couldn't get out.

I don't think I have ever hyped myself up for a book as much as I did for this one. Perhaps my expectations were unattainably high - to be fair, the middle part of the book was spectacular. Ultimately didn't like the way the story ended and also found the beginning a bit of a slog.

it was insanely long
it was an interesting way to get a crash course in the history of indian independence
I liked the magical realism elements but didn’t like how expository the narrative voice was at times
At one point I think he literally says “ don’t trust every thing I say in telling this story “ I’m like dude… let me figure that out yeah?
Also could do without the incest subplot

I didn't love this book until I was well-past the 400th page (hence only three stars). By the time that I realized it had won me over, its characters were already well-inside my head - showing up in imaginary dialogues and in the grocery aisles. I loved the reality and gritty imperfections of each of the minor characters, but Saleem never really convinced me of his own emotion and existence.
