A genuine revelation. The most intricate and gorgeous prose.

My knowledge of Indian and Pakistani history is lacking, so much of this book didn’t register with me. I have a feeling if my understanding was improved, I’d appreciate this much more. There were bits within the story I very much enjoyed, but I missed so much of the nuance that it was difficult to truly enjoy.

chococoa's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH

Tried three times and failed.

This was both good and just too much. The scope is vast, the prose is dense and lively, and the themes are right up my alley. Yet I had to read this in two phases nearly a year apart because it was just sort of a struggle to keep up with it. I don't know exactly why this was, but it never really clicked for me.

I think this is a book to be read and not listened to. I felt like I wasn't a good enough listener during the first few hours. The prose really needs to be savored.
