Not my cup of tea. Struggled through the bad writing style until a pretty graphic (and unnecessary) animal death, then put it down for good.

August 15, 1947 two boys are born at the exact stroke of midnight in a Bombay hospital, where they are switched by a catholic nurse. Saleem Sinai, will be raised in a Rich, and Muslim culture is actually the result of an illegitimate affair of a poor Hindu woman and a British colonist. The son of the Muslim couple, Shiva, is raised by the Husband of the unfaithful wife who dies giving birth to her child.

Saleem represents modern India. In his 30’s he’s writing his memoir “Midnight’s Children”. This multilayered novel places Saleem at every significant event that ever occurred in the Indian Subcontinent. Whereas Shiva is destined to be the celebrated war hero of India, as well as Saleem’s enemy.

There’s a prophecy that keeps reminding us Saleem and Shiva are just each other’s counterparts who compliment each other. While Shiva lives a life filled with poverty as a child, Saleem experiences all the lavish luxuries. As Shiva is risen Saleem experiences a gradual downfall in his life.

Rushdie’s Novel makes us experience all the good and evil, empowerment of women and patriarchy, Weak and Strong are the sides of the same coin.

While it gets political in parts, if you’ve been paying attention to the politics and happenings around you, you’ll just get a new perspective or just a defence of your existing thoughts.

I cannot skip talking about this one more thing, Saleem starts narrating the story from 30 years before his birth , from his maternal grandfather’s life, after all that’s when the changes in Indian society began so are the roots for his existence. I was fascinated with it.

This book goes straight over your head at moments but try and stick to it till the end because all the madness, all the questions, all the confusion will be answered.

My brain just gave up the moment I realised that I had gone through half of the book of an author who thinks that they're super intellectual and smart. All that investment in a singular character and their life story was not enough and connecting the thematic experiences and the heritage to the main protagonist is what I was supposed to carry out but I just could not with the pretentiousness of it all.

I adored Haroun and the Sea of Stories so much I added every other book by Rushdie to my TBR. Unfortunately, this book's narration style did not compute for my brain. To the point that I didn't DNF purely out of stubbornness and love for Haroun.

Also for some reason I thought this would be more like X-Men, which is kinda hilarious to me.

647 pages de souffrance.

The bath got lukewarm and I want to get out. It's a really good book and maybe next time I go to India I'll restart it and actually finish it. But for now I want to move on.
